Paul Brumer

Paul has contributed to a large number of areas in theoretical chemical physics. Examples include contributions in nonlinear mechanics and chaos in molecular processes, formal studies of classical-quantum correspondence in Hilbert Space, pioneering studies of quantum coherent control of molecular dynamics, and challenging developments in non-equilibrium processes in open quantum systems. Applications have ranged from light induced biological processes (e.g. vision) to ultracold chemical reactions. He has published over 320 research articles and two books, and has been the recipient of several awards, including a recent honorary DSc from the University of Chicago.

Adrien Devolder

Adrien studied his masters degree in chemistry at the Univerité libre de Bruxelles, with a specialization in quantum and theoretical chemistry. His masters thesis discussed the electronic structure of 2D materials. He then moved to the Université Paris-Saclay to obtain his PhD. Here he worked on controlling the formation of ultracold molecules, promising systems for quantum computing. In 2019 he joined the Chemical Physical Theory Group at the University of Toronto. Under the supervision of Prof. Paul Brumer, he currently works on coherent control of molecular collisions where molecules are prepared in a superposition of internal states and the induced interferences allow controlling the scattering observables.
Chern Chuang

Chern obtained his undergraduate and master's degree studies at the National Taiwan University, where he focused his study on the magnetic properties of exotic graphitic materials. He then moved to MIT for his PhD degree, where he theoretically studied the dynamical and spectroscopic features of molecular excitonic systems including photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes and organic photovoltaics. He is currently a research associate in the Brumer group and studies the simulation of photoisomerization reaction of rhodopsin, the first step in vision. In particular, it has been found that the steady state reaction quantum yield is extremely sensitive to the parameters of the system. Chern is also interested in the connection of this phenomenon to quantum chaos, classical resonance, and quantum transport among other related topics.
Leonardo Calderón

Leonardo Calderón obtained his Ph.D. in physics from the Industrial University of Santander (UIS), Colombia in 2021. He investigated non-adiabatic dynamics in photosynthetic complexes excited by coherent and incoherent light and the quantumness in vibrational dynamics using an open quantum system approach. He also explored how classical light fields could mimic the effects of quantum light sources on the matter. He has always been fascinated by the light-matter interaction and its potential to inspire novel ideas for quantum technologies. He is currently working on the effect of vibrational-electronic coupling in the non-equilibrium steady state of light-induced biological processes.
Davinder Singh

Davinder Singh studied at Panjab University and obtained his Ph.D. from IIT Ropar, working with Dr. Shubhrangshu Dasgupta. After completing his Ph.D., he joined Prof. Changbong Hyeon’s group at KIAS Seoul. At present, he is a postdoctoral research scholar at UofT with Prof. Paul Brumer. His research involves the theoretical study of open quantum systems. His current research interest includes the analysis of charge and energy transfer in the pigment-protein complexes and the thermodynamical properties of flux in a driven quantum system.
Masato Morita

Masato Morita is a research associate working on a collaborative international research project for the coherent control of ultracold molecular collisions and chemical reactions. He moved from Las Vegas, via Tokyo, to Toronto during the pandemic. His previous research focused on ultracold stereodynamic control of rotational quenching of molecules and on collisional spin-relaxations of atoms and molecules in the presence of an external magnetic field. He is currently working on developing computational models for controlling ultracold chemical reactions. He is undertaking massive parallel quantum reaction dynamics calculations for the relevant molecules in ultracold molecular physics.
